About Lower Body Lift Procedures
A lower body lift is a surgical procedure that typically targets the abdomen, hips, thighs, and buttocks to improve one’s overall silhouette.
It removes sagging skin circumferentially around the waist and includes a tummy tuck with continuation of skin and fat removal across the hips and all the way across the lower back / upper buttocks. Lower body lift surgery can result in an improved contour over the buttocks; front, back, and outer thighs; hips, and abdomen for a more proportionate appearance.
Lower body lifts have gained popularity over recent years, especially among individuals who have achieved significant weight loss and struggle with loose skin. (1)
Benefits
At New Image Plastic Surgery, our patients regularly see benefits like:
- Refined Contours: A lower body lift creates a smoother, more toned appearance by removing excess skin and unwanted fat.
- Improved Confidence: Many patients report a boost in self-confidence following the procedure, which may contribute to improved well-being and an overall enhanced quality of life. (2,3)
- Long-lasting Results: When combined with a healthy lifestyle, results should be long-lasting.
- Comprehensive Treatment: This procedure targets multiple areas of the lower body at once, allowing for a more complete transformation. By combining treatments into a single surgery, patients benefit from a more efficient recovery compared to undergoing separate procedures over time.
- More Youthful Appearance: Removing excess skin and fat helps enhance body contours, creating a firmer, more toned silhouette that appears more youthful.
- Reduced Skin Irritation: Excess skin over the lower body, specifically around the thighs, can cause chafing, irritation, and discomfort; a lower body lift can help alleviate these issues. (2)

- Are committed to maintaining a stable weight after the procedure.
- Do not smoke or are willing to quit for optimal healing.
- Have realistic expectations about the outcome of their surgery.
- Are in good overall health with no serious medical conditions.

Preparation
Detailed instructions for how to prepare for a lower body lift will be given to you before the procedure. Specific instructions may vary between patients depending on their established treatment plan and lifestyle. We ask that each patient follow any instructions to ensure a smooth recovery and ideal outcome.
Patients may be asked to avoid the use of medications and supplements with blood-thinning properties. Patients should coordinate transportation home following the procedure, as well as any household assistance they may need during the initial recovery phase. Time away from work and other social commitments should also be pre-arranged so that the patient can focus on healing.
Procedure
The procedure will look different for each patient depending on a variety of factors, such as each patient’s concerns and the complexity of the patient’s anatomy and skin distribution.
Anesthesia is administered to ensure patient comfort. Your surgeon will strategically make incisions in discreet areas to minimize visible scarring. The lower body lift procedure commonly includes an incision made horizontally across the hipbones and along the bikini line to tighten the abdomen, groin, waist, thighs, and buttocks, all in one procedure. This is a body contouring surgery that is capable of removing an apron of loose skin and fat to improve the overall contour of the lower torso. Most scarring will be hidden beneath a small pair of underwear or a bathing suit.
Recovery
After your body contouring surgical procedure is finished, your surgeon may place drains to help collect any excess fluid during recovery.
Following a lower body lift, it is normal to experience some swelling, bruising, and discomfort that typically subsides within a week or two. Any discomfort can be controlled with pain medication. You will need to wear the compression garments you are provided to support and protect your new contours and minimize swelling.
Patients should not do any strenuous activity or lifting for 4-6 weeks, so be sure to have someone to assist you during recovery..
Results

After residual swelling dissipates, patients will appreciate the full transformation of their lower body lift. Results from a body lift are permanent, so you can enjoy your new body contour long-term!
Following this procedure, patients often experience an enhanced silhouette and highlighted contours, leading to an increase in self-esteem and confidence. (3) Scarring is typically discreet and easy to hide beneath clothing. Scars tend to fade significantly over time.

FAQ
What is the difference between a lower body lift and a body contouring procedure?
A lower body lift is a type of body contouring procedure specifically focusing on the abdomen, waistline, and buttocks. It involves significant surgical techniques tailored to shape the lower torso, unlike other body contouring methods that may focus on more limited regions of the body.
What areas does a lower body lift address?
A lower body lift can address the buttocks, lower back fat rolls, outer thighs, hips, and abdomen.
Will I have scarring after a lower body lift?
While there will be surgical scarring, our surgeon take great care to strategically place incisions in inconspicuous areas. Over time, these scars will fade considerably.
Is a lower body lift permanent?
A lower body lift is designed to give permanent results; however, patients should continue to maintain a stable weight and a healthy lifestyle post-surgery. Fluctuations in weight can affect the appearance of the treated areas.
How long does the lower body lift surgery take?
The duration of a lower body lift procedure can vary depending on the extent of the surgery and the specific areas being treated. On average, the surgery may take 5 to 7 hours. Your surgeon will give you a more precise time estimate during your consultation based on your personalized treatment plan.
When can I return to work after a lower body lift?
Most patients can return to non-strenuous work within 2 to 4 weeks, but this may vary based on your individual healing progress and job requirements. If your job involves physical activity, a longer recovery period may be necessary. Your surgeon will provide guidance tailored to your occupation.
Can I combine a lower body lift with other procedures?
Yes, a lower body lift is often combined with other body contouring procedures such as arm lifts (brachioplasty) or breast surgeries. Combining procedures can be an efficient way to achieve more comprehensive results, but it must be done safely. Your surgeon will assess your candidacy during the consultation.
How soon after weight loss can I get a lower body lift?
It’s generally recommended to wait until your weight has been stable for at least 6 months before undergoing a lower body lift. This helps ensure the best and most stable results. Your surgeon will evaluate whether your body has adjusted sufficiently to proceed safely with contouring procedures.
