About Hair Transplants

Hair transplantation is a term that refers to a type of procedure designed to help restore hair density and growth to areas experiencing thinning or balding. Hair loss is a common concern, affecting approximately 67% of males and up to 24% of females. The most frequent cause of hair loss is androgenetic alopecia. (1) This genetic condition causes hair loss at any time after puberty and can affect up to 50% of males and females. (2)

NeoGraft Follicular Unit Extraction

At New Image Plastic Surgery, we use the NeoGraft (NeoGraft®) follicular unit extraction device to perform our hair transplants. Follicular unit extraction (FUE) is a type of minimally invasive hair restoration technique that involves the extraction of individual hair follicles from a predetermined donor area over the back of your scalp. (3) NeoGraft utilizes suction technology to help harvest the most viable hair follicles for implantation into the scalp, bypassing any inconsistencies that may occur from manual extraction. The follicles over the back of your scalp are programmed for permanence. They remain even after hair in other areas of the scalp is lost in patients with advanced balding. When these follicles are transplanted to other areas on the scalp, they maintain the characteristics of the donor site.  Those transplanted follicles will remain when the rest of the native hair thins.

Benefits of Receiving a Hair Transplant

There are many benefits patients can experience after receiving a hair transplant. Hair transplants offer a safe, effective, and permanent solution to treating areas of thinning and shedding hair. The use of advanced NeoGraft FUE technology allows for follicles to be harvested and implanted reliably while preserving the surrounding scalp tissue, offering minimal scarring and an overall shorter recovery time compared to more traditional restoration methods. Patients undergoing this treatment can also enjoy new hair growth that blends seamlessly into their hairline, leaving natural-looking results that not only restore their appearance but also their confidence.

Ideal Candidates

Ideal candidates for hair transplantation are those experiencing symptoms of hair loss. Individuals experiencing thinning at the crown of their head, a widening part, excessive shedding, receding hairline, or those diagnosed with androgenic alopecia are recommended for this treatment. (4) Patients should also possess enough healthy hair over the back of their scalp to harvest for the procedure.

All candidates interested in a hair transplant should have realistic expectations and be in good overall health and free of any underlying conditions that may impair healing. If applicable, candidates should be mentally prepared to quit smoking several weeks before their treatment and remain nicotine and tobacco-free until fully healed

To find out if you may be an ideal candidate for a hair transplant, please contact us online or call Dr. Brostrom at (210) 607-6316 or Dr. Homas at (210) 640-6310.

Personal Consultation

Each patient interested in a hair transplant is asked to schedule a personal consultation with either Dr. Brostrom or Dr. Homas. Each consultation is a chance for our team to get to know each patient on a more personal level and to understand the motivations behind their decision to undergo hair transplantation. After discussing each patient’s medical history and concerns, the surgeon will determine the best strategies and methods for treatment. Once each treatment plan is established, patients will receive a set of preoperative and postoperative instructions along with the full, written cost of their procedure.

Preparation

Before each treatment, each patient’s surgeon will provide individualized preparation instructions at their consultation; however, preparation for a hair transplant is fairly straightforward. Patients should pre-arrange transportation home after their procedure, as well as arrange for any time away from work and social activities to focus on their recovery. Any prescriptions for medication will need to be filled, and patients should cease the use of certain supplements or medications that may thin the blood.

If applicable, please stop smoking as early as possible and refrain from the use of tobacco and nicotine until fully healed. Alcohol consumption should also be ceased several days before and after the procedure. (1)

Procedure

Each hair transplant begins with oral sedation and the administration of anesthesia to ensure each patient feels relaxed and comfortable. The patient will obtain a high and tight shave over the donor site before using the NeoGraft machine to harvest healthy hair follicles. The NeoGraft uses a motorized punch that gently rotates around the hair graft before using gentle suctioning technology to harvest the follicle. Hair technologists will implant the hair with punctures that mimic the direction of each patient’s natural hair growth patterns to create natural-looking results

Recovery and Results

Following hair restoration, patients should focus on resting and recovering. Swelling, light bruising, or redness can be experienced around the treated area and donor site. These side effects will gradually subside on their own within several days, and any discomfort can be managed through the use of approved over-the-counter medications.

Patients will be able to return to normal activity within a few days, but will likely experience scabbing around their graft placements. Please refrain from picking at any scabs, as they are a normal part of recovery

Results of a NeoGraft hair restoration procedure can typically be seen 6 months after your initial treatment. New hair growth may be very fine at first, but will continue to get thicker and more dense as growth continues. Any visible scarring will continue to fade and can easily be hidden behind both long and short hairstyles. Patients are welcome to contact our office with any questions or concerns during this time, but are asked to remain patient during the initial growth period. The results of hair transplantation are permanent and natural-looking, as our team ensures that follicles are placed to blend in and mimic your natural hair growth patterns

How long does it take to perform a NeoGraft hair transplant?

A NeoGraft hair transplant can take several hours to perform, with exact timing being determined by the size of each patient’s treatment area, as well as the complexity of the procedure itself.

Will there be visible scarring after my hair transplant?

The NeoGraft hair transplant procedure is designed to leave minimal scarring, as this treatment harvests individual follicles instead of using a linear incision. Less than 10% of the surface area over the donor site is harvested, and once the scabs fall off after 1 week, there is no visible scar over the donor site.

What happens to the transplanted follicles after the procedure?

Some patients may experience temporary shedding of the hair shafts, also known as “shock loss,” about 1 month after the grafts are placed, but the transplanted hair follicles remain in the scalp and will grow and produce new hair over time.

How long is the expected recovery period for a hair transplant?

Patients can expect to return to most activities within several days, but the grafts will be fragile for 2 weeks.

Can women undergo a NeoGraft hair transplant?

Both men and women experiencing hair loss and thinning hair can undergo a NeoGraft hair transplant.

Can my hair transplant be combined with another procedure?

Yes, our hair transplant procedure can be complemented by another procedure to maximize benefits and achieve more comprehensive results.
