About Breast Lifts

Breast lifts are one of the most widely performed cosmetic surgical procedures in the country, ranking as the fourth most commonly performed aesthetic procedure in 2024, with over 153,616 procedures completed in 2024 alone. (2) Patients will see optimal results by choosing a highly trained surgeon like Dr. Lisa Brostrom. A breast lift requires a high level of attention to detail and precision.

Candidates

Ideal candidates for a breast lift typically include women interested in improving the appearance, position, and shape of their breasts with minimal alteration of their volume. (3) Women experiencing sagging breasts, malpositioned or downward-facing areolas, or asymmetry are frequently suitable candidates for this procedure. Anyone interested in a breast lift should be in good general health and maintain realistic expectations regarding the results.

This procedure is not recommended for women who are pregnant, still breastfeeding, or are interested in a significant change in breast size. Patients wishing to increase or decrease the size of their breasts may benefit more from breast augmentation or breast reduction. Ultimately, your candidacy will be determined during your consultation.

Personal Consultation

During a personal consultation, you will meet personally with Dr. Lisa Brostrom. They will explain what a breast lift entails and the different techniques that may be performed during the procedure. They will also discuss your medical history, current medications, and desired results. A medical examination will also be performed to evaluate the degree of breast ptosis (sagging) present.

The details shared throughout the consultation will be used to develop your personalized procedure plan, which will be tailored to your unique goals and anatomy. You will be provided with a set of tailored pre- and post-operative instructions, as well as a cost estimate for the procedure.

Preparation

You will receive a set of preoperative instructions from your surgeon during your consultation. Following these closely is important, as preparation is key to a successful breast lift.

You may be asked to:

  • Discontinue medications and supplements that contain blood-thinning properties
  • Cease alcohol consumption
  • Quit smoking/using nicotine fully several weeks beforehand
  • Arrange transportation home from the procedure
  • Pick up any necessary medications in advance
  • Arrange for at-home care, ideally with someone who can stay overnight with you to help you with your immediate recovery

Procedure

Your surgeon will use a skin-safe marker to create surgical markings, outlining the placement of incisions and areas of correction. A qualified anesthesia provider will administer anesthesia.

The incision technique your surgeon uses will vary depending on your anatomy and desired results, and will be discussed during your initial appointment. Techniques include:

  • The Crescent Moon Incision: This incision places a small crescent-shaped incision along the upper portion of the areola to move the nipple upward slightly.
  • The Donut Incision: The donut incision encircles the nipple-areolar complex. This technique is primarily performed if you are experiencing minimal sagging and require less extensive lifting.
  • The Lollipop Incision: The lollipop incision, also known as a vertical mastopexy, involves a donut incision with an additional incision that extends downward towards the breast crease.
  • The Anchor Incision: Also known as the Wise pattern or the inverted T incision, this technique builds off of the lollipop incision, adding a third horizontal incision along the breast crease. The anchor incision is used when extensive corrections are necessary and the skin and soft tissue quality are poor.

After making the necessary incisions, your surgeon will lift the breasts, elevating their position on the chest wall. They will also remove excess tissue, creating a perkier, more youthful appearance. The nipple areolar complexes will also be repositioned to center them over the breast mound.

The duration of the breast lift will vary depending on the details of your treatment plan, but it typically takes between three to four hours to perform.

Recovery

Each breast lift is performed on an outpatient basis, which means you will be released to go home on the same day as your procedure to continue recovering.

As you recover, you may experience local bruising, swelling, or tenderness near the treated areas. These effects are temporary, but may be managed using medications as prescribed by your surgeon. Wearing your compression garment will also help reduce any additional swelling and support the new shape of your breasts.

You may return to work and other light activities after one to two weeks, but you will need to continue avoiding physical or strenuous activities until cleared to return. You will also be asked to attend follow-up appointments throughout your recovery, where we can monitor your progress and ensure the results align with your expectations and goals. Any further recovery instructions will be provided and discussed during your consultation.

FAQ

What is a breast lift?

A breast lift is a surgical procedure that elevates and reshapes the breasts by removing excess skin and lower hanging breast tissue while tightening the surrounding tissues.

How will I know which breast lift technique is right for me?

The surgical technique used will depend on the amount of ptosis experienced. During your consultation, Dr. Lisa Brostrom will discuss each technique and recommend the best one for your needs.

Will I still be able to breastfeed after my breast lift?

Pregnancy and breastfeeding may alter the final results of your procedure, but 85% of women who were able to breastfeed prior to the procedure are able to breastfeed after the procedure.

Will my breast size change after a breast lift?

A breast lift is not designed to significantly change the size of your breasts, but it may be paired with a breast augmentation for volume enhancements. For those patients who desire a smaller breast, a breast reduction can be performed.

How much scarring should I expect after my breast lift?

Our surgeon strives to minimize the appearance of scarring as much as possible by placing scars strategically. While scarring will fade significantly over time, the extent of scarring will depend on the techniques performed and the individual patient’s scarring characteristics.

If I undergo a breast lift, will I be able to undergo another breast procedure in the future?

Yes, you may be able to undergo another breast procedure in the future; however, it should be communicated to your surgeon that you have undergone a breast lift in the past.

Can my breast lift be combined with another cosmetic procedure?

Yes, many patients choose to combine their procedure with another for more comprehensive results. For personalized suggestions based on your goals, we recommend scheduling a personal consultation.

What is the difference between a breast lift and a breast reduction?

A breast lift is more focused on rejuvenation and removes excess tissue from the breasts, repositions the nipples, and brings the breasts to a higher position on the chest. A breast reduction is very similar to a breast lift, but more breast tissue is removed with a reduction in order to reduce the overall breast size. Both procedures can enhance confidence and comfort.
