What are Facial Implants?
Facial implants are made from silicone rubber and are most often placed in the cheeks, chin, and jawline, but can be customized for any area that you choose. Implants are available in a wide variety of sizes to create anything from a subtle contour enhancement to a more strongly chiseled, defined look. Facial implants are permanent for a sculpted look that lasts. Although facial implants are considered permanent, they can still be replaced and removed at any point upon the patient’s request.
Who is a Candidate?
Candidates for facial implants are men who desire more bony prominence around the eyes, cheeks, chin, or jawline. Men can lose volume to their face due to age or might be born with less prominent features. Men can benefit from facial implants if they feel less confident due to an unbalanced, sunken face, or features that they wish were more prominent. Facial implants are an effective option for men who want a permanent solution rather than temporary effects from injectable fillers.
The Procedure
Your procedure for facial implants will depend on the type of implants you’ve chosen to receive. Surgery will be performed under local anesthesia with sedation to ensure your comfort and safety during the procedure. For cheek, chin, and jaw implants, small incisions are made inside the mouth to hide scarring. Temple implant incisions can be placed in the hairline. The implants are then put in place through the incisions and secured into place to keep the implant from moving or sagging over time. The procedure can take anywhere from 30 minutes to several hours depending on the size and placement you’ve chosen for implants.
Recovery
After your face implant procedure, you will be sent home to finish recovering. Dr. Homas or Dr. Brostrom will provide you with all the necessary post-op care instructions. These should be followed closely for a successful recovery and results. Most patients recover very quickly from facial implant surgery. You might experience swelling, bruising, and mild pain during the first few days, but these are all normal and should quickly begin to subside. Pain can be managed with medication or application of an ice pack. You should refrain from bending, lifting, and more strenuous activity during the first few weeks. The results of your facial implant surgery might not be fully noticeable until swelling has diminished, which can take several weeks after your procedure.
