What to Expect After Blepharoplasty

A blepharoplasty can enhance the appearance of your eyes, making you look more awake and refreshed. However, many patients have concerns about what happens after their procedure. Like any surgical procedure, blepharoplasties require some downtime, but this is the last step to getting the results you want! Here are a few things you can expect after your blepharoplasty procedure.  Men looking for eyebrow enhancement may consider a blepharoplasty for men.

Discomfort

The amount of discomfort after a blepharoplasty procedure varies from patient to patient. You can expect some degree of swelling, irritation, and bruising during recovery. These symptoms will be the worst in the few days after your procedure, but should only get better from there! To manage any pain, you can take over-the-counter pain medication or prescription pain medication. Swelling can be reduced by using an ice pack and keeping your head elevated. Your eyes might be dry or irritated during recovery, but artificial tear eye drops can help with these symptoms.

Restrictions

You will have the most restrictions in the first week of your recovery. This will include taking time off work, so you can recover comfortably at home with someone to care for you. During this time, you should avoid activities that could strain or dry out your eyes such as watching TV, looking at a computer screen, or reading extensively. You should not wear any makeup or contacts during this time. Sutures are removed about 5 days after surgery.

After the first week of your procedure, you will probably feel well enough to resume regular activities, but should still avoid any strenuous activity until three or four weeks. Activities to avoid include bending, lifting, and anything that might increase blood flow to the eyes. You should also be careful to avoid sun exposure or use sun protection during the first few weeks.

Results

You might not see true results in the first couple weeks of recovery, but don’t become discouraged! Your eyes need time to heal before they reveal results. As swelling diminishes, you will start to notice the results of your procedure with eyes that are youthful, awake, and refreshed. Your patience during recovery will all be worth it when the new appearance of your eyes is revealed.
