About Eyelid Lifts
Sagging skin around the eyes is often one of the first signs of facial aging. (1) As we age, the skin around our eyes and eyelids can begin to sag, sometimes impairing our line of vision. Puffiness under the eyes, dark circles, and sagging lower eyelids can also occur. These issues can impact one’s self esteem and make patients look older than they are. When interacting with others, the eyes are frequently the point of focus during conversation. In 2023, specialists performed more than 120,700 eyelid lifts to help patients achieve a more refreshed, youthful look. (2)
The customizable procedure can remove / reposition the underlying fat beneath the eyes as well as address excess skin for a comprehensive approach. As you age, facial fat can begin to descend, creating puffiness beneath the eyes and making you look tired. Eyelid surgery can reposition this tissue for a more awake and alert appearance.
Types of Eyelid Lifts
There are several different types of eyelid lifts which can be performed depending on your goals:
- Upper Eyelid Lift: During an upper eyelid lift, a thin incision is made within the natural creases of the upper lids to tighten the skin. Removing excess fat deposits can help achieve smoother upper eyelids.
- Lower Eyelid Lift: During a lower eyelid lift, a thin incision is made just below the lower lash line and/or inside the lower eyelid. Excess skin is removed and the underlying fat is removed or repositioned.
- Quad Eyelid Lift: A quad or 4 lid eyelid lift is performed to remove excess skin from both the upper and lower lids to achieve a smoother appearance.
Benefits
There are several benefits of an eyelid lift, including:
- A more youthful appearance
- Improved field of vision
- Reduced dark circles
- Minimal downtime
- Improved self-confidence
- Discreet scarring
- Lasting results
- Customizable procedure
Candidates
You are likely a good fit for eyelid surgery if you have sagging skin and/or bulging fat around the upper or lower eyelids. If you have droopy skin along the upper lids, an upper eyelid surgery can be performed to remove it. Lower eyelid surgery is likely the best fit to reduce dark circles and remove lower eyelid fat and sagging skin from the lower lids.
The best candidates are nonsmokers who take good care of their skin. Whether you are looking for lower or upper blepharoplasty, this aesthetic surgery is intended to boost your self-image and confidence. You are likely a good candidate if you are in good health and have realistic expectations for the procedure’s outcomes.
Personal Consultation
During your consultation, Dr. Brostrom or Dr. Homas will examine your eyes and discuss your aesthetic goals. Please come prepared to discuss your medical history, current medications, and lifestyle to help us create a personalized treatment plan for you. If you have additional goals, your surgeon can recommend other treatments. Patients may choose to combine their eyelid lift procedure with a facelift, brow lift, neurotoxins, or dermal fillers to enhance their result.

Preparation
To prepare for your procedure, there are several steps your surgeon may recommend taking. These often include:
- Stop taking blood thinners
- Refrain from smoking for 6 weeks before and after your procedure
- Pick up any medications you need for your recovery
- Arrange a ride home afterward
- Run errands ahead of time
- Schedule time off work
Procedure
During your procedure, our team will cleanse your skin and administer anesthesia. The incisions for both upper and lower eyelid lifts are concealed within the natural folds of the eyelids, so they are barely noticeable when healed. To rejuvenate both the upper and lower lids, your surgeon can perform quad eyelid surgery for a more comprehensive procedure.
Recovery & Results
You will need approximately 1 week to recover from upper eyelid surgery and 2 weeks to recover from lower eyelid surgery. During your recovery, you should take your medications as directed to ensure a more comfortable recovery. It is important that you sleep with your head elevated higher than your chest to minimize swelling and bruising. You should not participate in strenuous activities or intense exercise for 4-6 weeks after your eyelid lift. Your surgeon will let you know when you can return to work and exercise. The amount of downtime required will depend on your personalized procedure.
After you have healed from your procedure, you will enjoy smoother skin around the eyes with fewer wrinkles. Many patients report being satisfied with their refreshed appearance and the more alert appearance that the eyelid lift creates. Taking good care of your skin will allow you to enjoy long-lasting results. UV exposure can cause further wrinkles, laxity, and hyperpigmentation, so wearing sunscreen and protecting your skin is a must. (3)
Additional Procedures
Facelift
A facelift removes excess/sagging skin from the face for a more youthful appearance. Your surgeon can make discreet incisions to tighten the skin and underlying facial muscles for lasting results. The procedure can reduce wrinkles and tighten loose skin to rebalance your facial proportions and improve self-confidence.
Brow Lift
A brow lift lifts the brows and repositions the skin of the forehead to reduce fine lines and wrinkles. A brow lift is complementary to an eyelid lift as receiving both procedures can provide more comprehensive rejuvenation to the upper portion of the face.
Dermal Fillers
Dermal fillers and fat grafting restore volume to your skin for a plumper, more youthful appearance. Many individuals lose facial volume with age, resulting in hollow cheeks and dark undereye circles. We can effectively restore volume with filler or fat grafting without an unnatural or “overfilled” appearance.

FAQ
Is eyelid surgery painful?
Anesthesia is administered during eyelid surgery to maximize patient comfort. After your procedure, it is normal to experience discomfort in the treated areas as they heal. Take any medications as advised by your surgeon to minimize discomfort during the recovery process.
Will I need more than one eyelid surgery?
Unless you experience further changes to your skin over time, you will only need one eyelid lift to achieve results.
Can I combine an eyelid lift with other procedures?
Yes, we can combine an eyelid lift with other procedures if you have additional aesthetic goals. Discuss your options with your surgeon during your personal consultation.
How do I know if an upper or lower eyelid lift is right for me?
We will examine the areas around your eyes during your consultation to determine the best type of procedure for your needs. If you have undereye puffiness, we can address it with a lower eyelid lift. If you have droopy skin above the eyes that is affecting your field of vision, we can perform an upper eyelid lift and possibly a brow lift.
How long will an eyelid lift take?
This will depend on your personalized plan. Most eyelid lifts take around 1-2 hours.
Will I have visible scarring after my eyelid lift?
Eyelid lifts are surgical procedures that require incisions. However, your surgeon will make discreet incisions along the natural creases of your eyelids, so the incisions will be imperceptible once they heal.
