What is a Facelift?
A facelift is a surgical procedure that removes excess skin and fat from the face and tightens existing tissue. A facelift can result in a more youthful appearance with fewer wrinkles and sagging skin. Despite some misconceptions, a facelift won’t make you look more feminine, instead, you can expect to look like a younger, more rested version of yourself. A facelift can even make you look more masculine by sharpening the jawline and other facial features.
Who is a Candidate for a Facelift?
Facelift candidates are men who experience any of the following issues:
- Wrinkles or creases in the face
- Double chin
- Sagging skin in the face and neck
To be a successful facelift candidate, you must be in good health and be a non-smoker to ensure a successful recovery after surgery. Successful candidates will also maintain realistic expectations for results while keeping a positive outlook.
Facelift Procedure
A facelift procedure for men is very similar to a facelift procedure for women. First, you will be administered either sedation or general anesthesia for your comfort during surgery. Next, incisions are made, typically in the hairline at the temples, and around the ears. A second incision might be needed under the chin if there is a lot of work to do on your neck. Facial tissues are then repositioned and excess skin is removed. Drains are usually placed, and the incisions are closed with sutures.
Facelift Recovery
Recovery time from a facelift can vary depending on the extent of sagging you had corrected. Your surgeon will provide you with specific post-op instructions that should be read and followed carefully to ensure proper recovery. Immediately following your facelift procedure, your face will be bandaged to minimize swelling and small tubes will be placed to drain excess fluid. During the first days of recovery, you can expect to experience some swelling, soreness, tenderness, and stiffness that will diminish over the next few weeks. After two or three weeks, most patients feel well enough to go out in public and return to work.
