What is Blepharoplasty?
Blepharoplasty is a procedure to correct the appearance of saggy eyelids and puffy under-eyes. Both the upper and lower eyelids can be treated with this procedure.
Who is a Candidate?
Candidates for a blepharoplasty are men who suffer from one of the following:
- Loose or sagging skin in the upper eyelids
- Impaired vision due to drooping eyelids
- Fatty deposits in the eyelids creating a puffy appearance
- Bags under the eyes
- Drooping lower eyelids
- Excess skin or wrinkles in the lower eyelid
Candidates must also be healthy individuals with no serious eye conditions. Successful candidates are non-smokers able to maintain a positive attitude with realistic goals in mind.
The Procedure
Eyelid surgery begins with local anesthesia and sedation administered for your comfort during the procedure. Incisions for your procedure will be made so that scars are concealed within the natural eye structures. For the upper lid, incisions are made within the natural crease of the eyelid for the removal of excess skin, muscle, and fat. For correction of lower eyelids, incisions are made below the lower lash line and excess fat and skin are removed, and the incisions are closed with sutures. If your lower eyelids need additional support, Dr. Homas or Dr. Brostrom will discuss this with you before the surgery.
Recovery
After your eyelid procedure, your eyes might be loosely covered. You can expect swelling, bruising, discomfort, and possibly dry eyes during the initial healing process. This can be managed through medication, ointment, and cold compresses. You should plan on resting and staying home during the first few days of recovery. For the first few weeks, you should avoid any strenuous activity, especially activity with abrupt head movement. It is important to protect your healing skin from the sun with dark-tinted sunglasses. You will also want to follow any post-op instructions provided to you by your surgeon. Many patients feel well enough after 2-3 weeks of recovery to return to normal activity.
