Liposuction
Conveniently located to serve the areas of San Antonio, TX

Liposuction is a body contouring procedure that removes pockets of excess fat for a smoother, more sculpted appearance. It is common to have stubborn, exercise-resistant fat. Liposuction can remove excess fat from almost any area of the body, including the thighs, hips, buttocks, abdomen, arms, back, ankles, and under the chin. We can sculpt multiple areas of the body during a single treatment to address multiple goals and minimize downtime.
At New Image Plastic Surgery, Dr. Lisa D. Brostrom and Dr. Dallas W. Homas have helped many patients with customizable procedures designed to contour their figures for a smoother appearance.

About Liposuction
Liposuction removes excess fat for a smoother, contoured, and more athletic appearance. In 2023, specialists performed more than 347,700 liposuction treatments to help patients sculpt their figures for a more athletic appearance. (1) Stubborn fat can be difficult to address with lifestyle changes alone. Although a healthy diet and regular exercise can help burn fat and build muscle, these methods do not necessarily address the stubborn fat deposits that can remain even after significant weight loss. (2)
During liposuction, we use tumescent fluid–a combination of saline, epinephrine, and lidocaine–which causes the fat cells to swell and decreases bleeding, optimizing fat removal with minimal blood loss. This method also helps minimize trauma to the surrounding tissue and can help minimize recovery time.
Liposuction for Men
Liposuction for men is a procedure that is designed to help men sculpt their physique and emphasize their muscle definition for a more masculine and athletic appearance. We can remove stubborn fat from your abdomen, chest, midsection, waistline, neck, and jawline. To learn more about how liposuction can help you achieve a more toned, muscular appearance, see the blog!
Liposuction vs. Tummy Tuck
Although liposuction can remove excess fat, it does not address loose, excess skin. A tummy tuck is a procedure that removes excess skin and fat from the midsection for a slimmer, more athletic figure. During a tummy tuck, your surgeon will make an incision along the lower abdomen to remove the excess skin from the midsection. Your surgeon will also perform muscle repair at this time if you experience diastasis recti or the separation of the abdominal muscles. This is a common occurrence after pregnancy or significant weight gain.
Benefits
There are several benefits of liposuction, including:
- Smoother figure: Removing excess fat can help you achieve a smoother, more athletic figure.
- Improved athletic appearance: We can highlight your muscle definition for a smoother, more toned appearance.
- Outpatient procedure: You will return home after a monitoring period.
- Customizable treatment: We can perform liposuction in various areas to help you achieve your desired results.
- Better mobility: Removing excess tissue can make it easier to exercise.
- More clothing options: You will find that many types of clothing are more flattering after liposuction. Clothing that you were previously unable to wear because of unflattering bulges will now fit more appropriately.
- Customizable procedure: We can address multiple areas of the body with a single treatment.
- Improved self-esteem: You will feel more confident about your appearance after your procedure.
Candidates
Suitable candidates for liposuction are generally non-smokers or are willing to quit smoking. Good candidates are in good overall health and would like to remove pockets of exercise-resistant fat which affect their proportions and lower their self-esteem. Although liposuction cannot help you lose weight, it can contour your figure for a smoother, more toned appearance.
If you are close to your ideal body weight and would like to address pockets of stubborn fat, you are likely a good candidate for the procedure.
It is also important to have realistic expectations. Liposuction is not a weight loss procedure, but it can contour the body for a leaner appearance. If you are overweight or obese, you may need to lose weight before undergoing liposuction. We can discuss our weight loss program to help you achieve your body goals.
Consultation
During your consultation, your surgeon will ask about your current medications, medical history, and lifestyle. Your surgeon will examine your skin and discuss your aesthetic goals. Please come prepared to discuss any additional goals you have, if applicable.
Your surgeon can create a personalized plan to help you achieve your goals. If you recently lost weight, we can discuss combining your liposuction treatment with other body contouring procedures to address excess, loose skin – a common concern after weight loss.

Preparation
To prepare for liposuction, you must take good care of your body by getting adequate rest, exercising, and eating well. You must also stop taking blood-thinning medications and supplements.
Procedure
Our team will cleanse your skin and place you under anesthesia. We can perform small areas of liposuction under local anesthesia, which minimizes recovery time. Typically for larger areas of liposuction however, you will undergo IV sedation. Your surgeon will mark your skin for surgery and make a small incision to inject tumescent fluid. Tumescent fluid is a solution that contains saline, lidocaine, and epinephrine and causes the fat cells to swell for easier removal. (3) The tumescent solution also causes constriction of blood vessels to minimize blood loss. Next, your surgeon will remove the fat with gentle suction that preserves the surrounding tissue.
After Your Surgery

Our nurse will monitor you in the recovery room for a period of time. Once you have met the criteria for discharge, you can return home to rest. We will provide a special compression garment to support your body while you heal. The compression garment will help reduce swelling. You can alleviate bruising and swelling with over-the-counter medication. You should avoid strenuous activity for several weeks after the procedure, and your surgeon will let you know when you may return to vigorous exercise. Your team will provide specific instructions tailored to your situation to optimize your recovery afterward.
Contact our office today to schedule your initial consultation if you are interested in liposuction for a slimmer body silhouette.
Results
You can enjoy results after a single liposuction procedure. We recommend that you eat healthy meals and maintain a stable weight for long lasting results. Weight fluctuations can significantly impact the results of your body contouring procedure. Leading a healthy lifestyle to include regular exercise, nutritious meals, and adequate sleep can help you achieve the best results. After the procedure, you will enjoy a smoother body contour. Many patients have improvements in their self-esteem afterward and feel more confident in their daily lives.
Corresponding Procedures
We also offer additional body procedures to help you sculpt your body for a smoother appearance.
Thigh Lift
A thigh lift is a procedure that removes loose, sagging skin from the thighs to create a smoother figure and a more athletic appearance. With aging and weight loss, loose skin is a common issue that can affect how clothing fits and how one feels about their body. Excess thigh skin can also result in uncomfortable chafing or rashes. By removing excess thigh skin with surgical techniques, patients can enjoy a smoother leg contour and improved daily comfort.
Mommy Makeover
A mommy makeover is a series of procedures that address changes to the body caused by pregnancy. During a mommy makeover, we can remove excess skin from the breasts and lift them to a higher position with a breast lift. We can also increase the volume of your breasts with implants and remove excess skin with a tummy tuck. Combining these procedures in one surgery allows for a single recovery time, rather than multiple different recovery periods.
Arm Lift
An arm lift removes droopy skin from the arms, colloquially known as “bat wings,” that swing uncomfortably and make it difficult to fit into the clothing you want to wear. Your surgeon can remove the excess skin with an incision along the underside of the upper arm. We can also remove the pockets of fat with liposuction for a smoother appearance.

FAQ
Will I have scarring after liposuction?
Because the procedure requires incisions for the insertion of the cannula (tube) for fat removal, it does result in minimal scarring. However, your surgeon takes great care to ensure that these incisions are in discreet, less visible areas.
How long will I need to wear a compression garment after liposuction?
You must wear a compression garment for several weeks to support your body and help you heal fully. Your surgeon will let you know when you can stop wearing the compression garments.
Is liposuction a weight loss procedure?
No, liposuction is not a weight loss procedure. However, liposuction can sculpt your body by removing excess fat. During your appointment, we can discuss any questions you have about weight loss and liposuction.
Should I get liposuction before or after I lose weight?
We recommend that patients wait until they are at their stable ideal weight before considering liposuction. Losing a significant amount of weight after liposuction can impact the results of the procedure.
