What is Microneedling?

Microneedling is a nonsurgical treatment that involves the use of a device containing many tiny needles. When the needles puncture the skin, they stimulate the body’s natural healing process. This involves increased blood flow to the area and collagen and elastin production. As the punctures are filled in with new collagen, the skin becomes stronger and smoother.

Who is a Good Candidate?

Candidates for microneedling are those in the San Antonio area who experience common skin concerns such as:

  • Fine lines
  • Wrinkles
  • Acne scars
  • Brown spots
  • Hyperpigmentation
  • Rough texture
  • Stretch marks

Those with severe acne, skin cancer, or certain skin conditions may not be candidates for treatment with microneedling. Microneedling treatment is also not recommended to those that are pregnant.

The Treatment Process

During treatment with microneedling, a pen-like device will be gently gliding across the skin. Several passes will be made over the target areas. You may feel a pricking sensation during the process, but a topical anesthetic can be applied before treatment to enhance your comfort. After the microneedling process, products will be applied to the skin to provide nutrients and enhance the results of treatment. The channels created below the surface of the skin during the microneedling process allow these products to be absorbed more effectively.

Recovery and Results

There is no downtime required after treatment with microneedling, however, patients might experience some mild side effects such as redness, swelling, and bruising. This should only last a few days. The skin will be extra sensitive after treatment, so it is important to apply sunscreen when going outside.

You might see some improvements right away after your microneedling treatment, however, the results will be gradual as your body begins to produce new tissue. After a few weeks, you can begin to notice smoother, more youthful looking skin that continues to improve over time.
