What is Facial Liposuction?

Liposuction involves the use of tiny incisions where a cannula is placed, gently breaking up and suctioning out the fat cells. This can improve your contour and help you find relief from pockets of stubborn fat. Liposuction can be used on virtually any part of the body, including the face. When it comes to contouring the face, the technique is used to target fat under the chin and in the neck and jaw area.

Who is a Candidate?

Candidates for facial liposuction are those that experience stubborn fat in the face, chin, and neck area that cannot be eliminated with diet and exercise. These pockets of stubborn fat can be present after weight loss, pregnancy, or due to the natural aging process or genetic factors. Liposuction is not a weight-loss procedure and will deliver the most effective results if patients are in their healthy weight range. Liposuction can be used to improve the appearance of a double chin or a hidden jaw and neckline caused for stubborn fat. Facial liposuction will not treat excess skin in these areas. If sagging skin is causing your poor facial contour, Dr. Homas or Dr. Brostrom might recommend a different treatment option like the facelift or neck lift. Facial liposuction can also be combined with these procedures for optimal contouring.

The Facial Liposuction Procedure

Facial liposuction will be performed with the use of local anesthesia to ensure a comfortable process. Tiny incisions will then be made under the chin and in the jaw area where stubborn fat is present. A tube-like device called a cannula will then be inserted, using a back and forth motion to break up the fat cell for removal.

Recovery and Results

After facial liposuction, patients can expect several days to a week of recovery time. During this time, patients might be instructed to wear a compression garment on the neck area to ensure proper healing. Swelling, bruising, and discomfort can be expected during this time but is manageable with the use of an ice pack and pain medication from your doctor. Patients typically feel well enough to get back to most regular activity in just a few days but should avoid strenuous exercise for several weeks. All post-op care instructions should be followed closely to ensure proper healing.

It can take several weeks for the swelling after facial liposuction to diminish, so it is important to be patient when waiting for results. After swelling has gone down, patients can ensure a slimmer jaw and neckline with more defined facial features. The results of liposuction are long-lasting. Once fat cells are eliminated, they will not return, however you can still gain weight in untreated areas. With a healthy diet and regular exercise, you can ensure the success of your procedure.
